Shortly after Gary and Valerie welcomed Kaleigh into their family, Gary was hospitalized due to complications from his cancer history. Being new to the Tidewater area and lacking nearby family support, Valerie and Kaleigh found a lifeline in the Fisher House, which offered them housing on the grounds of Portsmouth Naval Hospital at no cost. This crucial resource allowed Valerie to care for both Gary and Kaleigh without enduring the lengthy commute through the bridge tunnel.

Valerie's devotion to Gary during his illness was nothing short of heroic. Gary often credited his survival through Kaleigh's childhood to Valerie's unwavering care during his frequent bouts of illness. The Fisher House Foundation played an indispensable role in keeping our family close when it mattered most. Now, as we reflect on Gary's life and the legacy he leaves behind, we invite you to stand alongside our family in supporting other military families facing similar struggles. Your support honors Gary's legacy of resilience and community service, offering refuge and hope to military families in times of crisis.
